Global Mission

Coffee and Candy sold at SOH to benefit Lutheran World Relief.

Spirit of Hope Lutheran Church would like to make a difference in our member’s lives, and also to those who live outside our congregation, in the world. Our congregation promotes the ministries of Lutheran World Relief. You will find bags of coffee or bars of chocolate sold in our narthex most weekends. Our members have been active in packing food at the “Feed My Starving Children” site in Tempe, AZ. We have become active in assisting to serve breakfast at Grace Lutheran Church in downtown Phoenix. Each Sunday our worshippers are encouraged to drop extra monies in what we call our “Hunger Jar.” These funds are primarily sent on to the ELCA Hunger Appeal, but occasionally these monies are shared for various other emergency needs in the world. Recently our congregation has sponsored “Undies Weekend” and “Sock-it-to-Me Weekend” where underwear and socks were gathered for homeless ministries/women’s shelters in our community. We have a “Blanket Weekend” coming up where blankets will be distributed in a similar manner to those in need.

Thursday Women's Bible Study displays some underwear collected for "Undies Weekend".

Our Global Mission emphasis has leaked into our youth ministry too. Our teen group, called T.A.G. (Teen Attack Group or Teens About God) have distributed bag lunches on the street to any who appeared to be in need. This same group has met people at the doors of a Laundromat and washed people’s clothing as they entertained guests waiting for their wash. They have attacked neighborhood yards where the elderly were not able to keep up on the normal maintenance. T.A.G. cleaned, weeded, and did whatever was needed.

Our littlest children have raised funds for God’s Global Barnyard, Diamond Black Fan Anemia, and now for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Spirit of Hope continues to push forward breaking old boundaries allowing God’s spirit to reveal new opportunities and challenges in the coming months. If you would like more information about the Global Mission activities in our congregation, you may do so by contacting Mike Johnson at 520-509-1560.
